Message from Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Stamler | February 17, 2022

Winter weather means spending more time indoors baking, binging your favorite TV show, and, of course, reading!

The Scotch Plains Public Library is the ideal place to find the latest and greatest reads. It also has so many great programs outside of reading for people of all ages - both in-person and virtual.

Here are just some of their upcoming events:

Join us for “Polar Bears: Icons of the Arctic” with Dr. George Durner, a zoologist at the US Geological Survey's Alaska Science Center in Anchorage, on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 7-8 p.m.

Dr. Durner will speak about polar bears, how they are studied and the challenges they face in light of global warming impacting their habitat.

More information and how to register can be found here: https://www.scotlib.org/event/polar-bears-icons-of-the-arctic/

In honor of Black History Month, a program titled “The Roots of Black Music in America” will feature producer, songwriter, and teacher Karlus Trapp. Mr. Trapp will take us on a musical journey next Thursday, Feb. 24, from 7-8 p.m.

The Library continues to host a virtual Balance Awareness class every Friday morning, which is very popular with seniors citizens, although anyone is welcome to enjoy the benefits. Instructor Yasmin Ofek integrates principles from the Feldenkrais Method, which emphasizes moving with awareness to allow your nervous system to discover easier, more efficient movement patterns.

All upcoming dates can be found here: https://www.scotlib.org/event/balance-awareness-with-yasmin-ofek-9/all/

In addition, the Library continues to partner with our Parks and Recreation Department to provide delivery of materials to Scotch Plains residents who are 55 and over or living with a disability.

To participate, call 908-322-6700 x223. For little ones, the Library has a number of programs including crafts and story times. Check out the fun-filled events calendar for more info: https://www.scotlib.org/events/

My personal favorite service offered by the Library is Libby. It is a digital app for print books and audiobooks. You can also read while using a computer.

The Library is consistently updating the app with new titles. You can put items on hold and get notified when the book is available for you to borrow, just like in the library.

I hope you will take advantage of all that the Library has to offer now and when the new building is complete!
