Message from Councilman Roc White | February 25, 2022
Across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others will be developing activities to celebrate “Read Across America,” taking place March 2.
The day – also a celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss – brings the excitement of reading to children of all ages. In Scotch Plains, we see this as the ideal time to issue reading challenges to our young readers. And we’ve seen some, like one particular school principal, climb on the top of her building in a Dr. Seuss costume, welcoming students to school.
Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association, Read Across America Day is a fun and special event, with an important message to encourage a love for reading in our children.
Here are some ways in which we can all celebrate:
1. Head to the Town Library
The Scotch Plains Library has it all. There are librarians eager to help you choose the perfect book for your child. The library is at 1927 Bartle Ave. You can call them for the latest happenings for Read Across America Day at 908-322-5007 or email
2. Story Time
Who doesn’t love a good story? The library has story time throughout the week, or you can create your very own memorable event at home. Listening to stories helps us all connect with the world.
3. Swap Books
I have a favorite book. I bet you do, too. But why should we keep them to ourselves? Read Across America Day is the perfect excuse to tell someone about a great book, pass it on and encourage them to share the same experience.
4. Some Peace and Quiet
We all work and play hard. So, taking some time out of our busy day to enjoy a book is the perfect opportunity for quality, quiet time. Find your favorite spot and enjoy!
In honor of Read Across America, the Scotch Plains Library is hosting an after-school storytime program; participants will read favorite picture books out loud. Families can take home "To Go Crafts" as as supplies last.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2 at 4 p.m. Readers who feel included, recognized, and a part of the world are engaged readers. I hope that you’ll be able to share your favorite titles—and many others—to celebrate Read Across America on March 2 and throughout the year.
