Message from Mayor Josh Losardo | November 15, 2024

As we reflect on the events of this past year, and prepare to give thanks this holiday season, I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude for the spirit of unity and service that defines our community.

Time and again, we join together to support one another. It’s this dedication to each other and our town that makes Scotch Plains such a vibrant and welcoming place to call home.

Looking ahead to next year, we are pleased to build on this momentum and continue creating meaningful experiences and services for all.

However, none of our programs would be possible without the support and commitment of volunteers. It is the people like you, who dedicate their time and energy to making such a significant difference in the lives of so many.

Volunteers are counted upon month after month, year after year, to generously dedicate their time to Scotch Plains. Rarely do they receive the recognition they deserve.

From organizing events to helping neighbors in need, volunteers are the heart of our  community. We proudly consider them the quiet heroes in Scotch Plains who help ensure that our municipal government runs efficiently and effectively.

I am reaching out today to ask for your help in continuing this tradition of service. We’re seeking volunteers for a variety of roles across town. The list of organizations is long, but it is important to highlight the many volunteer opportunities available as we prepare for 2025.

The list includes the Scotch Plains Fire Department, the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad, the Construction Board of Appeals, the Environmental Commission, the Recreation Commission, the Library Board of Trustees, the Planning Board, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Green Brook Flood Control Commission and the Office of Emergency Management.

There’s also the Plainfield Area Regional Sewer Authority, the Rahway Valley Sewer Authority, the Union County Transportation Advisory Committee, the ADA Advisory Board, the Complete Streets Committee, the Veterans Advisory Board and the Downtown Redevelopment Committee.

We also have the Green Team, the Historical Documentation and Preservation Committee, the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign Committee, the Memorial Day Parade and Concert Committee, the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, and many, many other groups and individuals who make Scotch Plains such a wonderful place to live.

By serving on these boards, our neighbors and friends are making a real, tangible difference in contributing to the overall well-being of Scotch Plains.

Our volunteers are eager to share their perspectives and expertise. They also help ensure that the needs and concerns of residents are adequately represented at town hall, as they build lasting friendships.

Volunteering also provides residents with a deeper understanding of local government operations, the challenges faced by the Mayor and Township Council, and the complexities of public policy – even at the local level.

On behalf of the Township Council, thank you for considering this opportunity to give back to our town, offering your fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. Together, we can continue building a stronger, more connected Scotch Plains as we plan for the new year.
