Message from Councilmember Ellen Zimmerman | August 18, 2022

There is a collaborative effort this summer to encourage seniors in Scotch Plains to fill out an online survey, as we are looking for ways in which to ensure our programming is the most enjoyable and beneficial for our senior community.

The poll, which we released earlier this month, appears in this issue of the E-Messenger. If you are age 55 or over, please take a moment to fill out the short, anonymous survey. Residents will be able to respond through September 30.

Afterward, our Township’s Administration will review the information with me and other members of the Township Council, as we develop programming this fall for 2023 and beyond. I believe it is imperative that the programs we offer are relevant, interesting and become an integral part of the weekly schedule for township seniors.

This is the first time in at least eight years that Scotch Plains has undertaken a survey of the specific recreational and social needs of our 55+ community. After extensive discussion, we have carefully developed questions that would lead to a more constructive conversation about how to make our current programs even better, while trying out some new ones.

Town leaders cannot assume that we know better than residents about what they need. And that is why we are seeking your thoughts to help inspire a new, fresh round of programming that caters to you.

When you look at the survey – and I hope you do – you will notice that we list many of the programs that we already have in place.  There is the traditional activities, like Bingo, book delivery and arts and crafts, as well as more innovative programming, such as intriguing guest speakers, themed parties for special occasions and transportation services to popular spots around town and beyond, such as the Blue Star shopping center.

We are curious how many fellow residents take part in these individual programs. We also want to know which days of the week you are more inclined to participate, as such information leads to an effective schedule that encourages the widest participation possible.

We also suggest new programming, perhaps adding cooking classes, a book club, fun with technology, mindfulness/meditation, movies, gardening, knitting, board games and maybe even more social luncheons.

It is all really up to you. But please give us important direction. Click here for the survey, or follow the link below in this week’s E-Messenger.

On a final note, please mark your calendars for our annual Senior Appreciation Luncheon on September 22 at Shady Rest Country Club. The luncheon, from 10 a.m. to 1 pm., is open to all residents ages 55 and over. Lunch will be served at noon. You can register on CommunityPass or just call 908-322-6700 ext. 223.

As always, the luncheon is a free, not-to-miss event. In addition, please look out for a full calendar of new senior events that will be posted on our website, scotchplainsnj.gov, at the beginning of September.
