Message from Deputy Mayor Ellen Zimmerman

Message from Councilmember Ellen Zimmerman | March 28, 2025

When I head to the gym these days, it is often during the bustle of early morning rush in Scotch Plains before the public schools open.

At 7:30 a.m., I will often see working mothers bringing their young children to early education programs. The women are fully dressed for a day of work; their children have their well-stuffed backpacks, snacks and anything else they could possibly need while mom is away.

I think about what it has taken for them to get to this moment. I imagine by 7:30 a.m. many have already been awake for two hours, making sure permission slips were signed, teeth were brushed, a healthy breakfast was served, child complaints were addressed to the best of their ability and there was general momentum to get out the door on time.

And, so, as I see so many working moms making miracles every morning in Scotch Plains, I want to dedicate this Women’s History Month message in their honor. March is the time when we recognize and celebrate the often-overlooked contributions of women, the trailblazers who fought for equality and paved the way for future generations.

During Women’s History Month, we challenge traditional narratives and highlight the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the importance of empowering women today.

The women of Scotch Plains embody strength and adaptability, juggling their multiple roles with grace and determination. Whether they are leaders in corporate boardrooms, educators in classrooms, healthcare professionals on the front lines, entrepreneurs building their own businesses or volunteers in local schools and organizations their impact on our community is undeniable.

They bring unique perspectives, innovative ideas, and unwavering commitment to their professions, driving progress and fostering positive change. And they bring that same enthusiasm to volunteer at school, faith-based groups and charities throughout Scotch Plains. Their commitment continues at home as dedicated role models for their children.

The journey for working women has not been easy. Throughout history, they have faced countless obstacles, from discriminatory practices to societal expectations that confined them to specific roles. Yet, as we see every morning as they head to work, they have persevered, breaking barriers, challenging norms, and paving the way for future generations.

Let’s recognize the working women in Scotch Plains who continue to navigate a complex landscape, balancing professional responsibilities with family obligations and personal aspirations.

So many of them are mothers who manage childcare, household duties, and demanding careers, demonstrating exceptional time management and multitasking skills. They are role models for their children, as well as the entire Scotch Plains community, showing the importance of hard work, dedication, and pursuing one's passions.

I must also highlight the challenges that working women still face. Issues such as the gender pay gap, lack of affordable childcare, and underrepresentation in leadership positions persist. Addressing these inequalities is crucial for creating a more equitable society where all women have the opportunity to thrive.

We must continue to advocate for policies that support working women, such as paid family leave, accessible and convenient childcare, and, of course, equal pay for equal work.

To the working women of Scotch Plains: Your contributions are invaluable, your dedication is inspiring, and your strength is remarkable. Let’s take a moment to celebrate your achievements, support your endeavors and hope you get a well-earned nap in the near future.
