NJ Department of Education Officials Tour Shady Rest

On a mission to update the K-12 social studies curriculum in local schools, the Amistad Commission of the New Jersey Department of Education toured the historic Shady Rest Clubhouse on Thursday afternoon.

Sylvia Hicks, chair of the Preserve Shady Rest Committee, and Thurman and Ruby Simmons, co-chairs and founders of the John Shippen Memorial Golf Foundation, offered a passionate plea to the Commission, led by Executive Director Stephanie James Harris, to include the rich history of Shady Rest in the state's educational curriculum.

Mayor Josh Losardo introduced the several dozen educators in attendance to this national treasure in Scotch Plains. This year, Shady Rest, the first Black-owned golf clubhouse in America, is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
