The Union County Mudturtle Flag Rugby program is made up of teams from Berkeley Heights, Cranford, Dunellen, Rahway, Scotch Plains/Fanwood, Union, and Westfield. Occasionally, teams from Bridgewater, Somerset, Bayonne, and Montclair join for matches.
The Scotch Plains/Fanwood Raider Rugby organization was formed in 2015 by Will and Alycia Galway. Both Will and Alycia are former rugby players at Rutgers University and are current residents of Scotch Plains - along with their two children, Braedan and Addison.
Since its inception, the club has grown each year. The club currently has approximately 80 players from Scotch Plains and Fanwood. Participants range from ages 5-14 years old and are grouped into the following divisions:
5-6 year olds: OWLS
7-8 year olds: FALCONS
9-11 year olds: HAWKS
12-14 year olds: EAGLES
Flag Rugby matches are played mainly on Saturdays during the summer. The season typically runs from mid-June until the end of July, with the towns rotating the hosting responsibilities each week.
